Civil War Bible

Civil war era bibles are worth money to collectors. The text has not changed much, although the printing methods have changed greatly. The good book, as people have called it for many years, is often printed on the highest quality paper available. Religious people, believing it to be the most important document in their lives, wanted to make sure it would last.

In the 1860s, books were still expensive to produce although new methods of manufacturing the items were bringing the costs down for the average individual. The public education system of the United States had also made many people who went through it literate, a claim the same system cannot make today.

When looking for a civil war era Bible, the first thing the owner should check is the date the book was printed. The date will give the owner the clue of when it was printed more than any other item. If there is a family tree, it may increase the value of the book. Who it increases the value of the book to is significant. The odds that a person will run into a Lee or Grant family bible is unlikely, but a person tracing his roots would welcome any help he can get in the matter. If the purchaser can track down a living descendant, he may find that the descendant may be willing to pay monetary compensation to get the bible and its tree back in his possession. He probably already knows what the book is about, but he will value the saved research time.
